Unfortunately the luminosity on my laptop screen has failed[1]. I am using an external monitor but I am not able to use my FC8 system to display to the external monitor, I am using Knoppix which works fine.

What tips or pointers should I track down to try to get the FC8 system to output to the external monitor?

TIA,

[1] the screen still receives the image from the system, which you can see if you get very close to the screen...

What video chip is in your laptop? Specifically the make (ati, nvidia, intel, via, sis, ???) and model.

Do you see anything in text mode when the system boots with Knoppix? With Fedora?

Does your external monitor support DDC (Display Data Channel)? If it was made in the last 10 years it should support it.

What video driver is being used by Knoppix? By Fedora? Look in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to find out. Also look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log to make sure they match up. The log file will also tell what is being detected and set by the video driver. Look for info about the external monitor being detected and activated.

Do you have access to the laptop remotely (ssh)? That will make it easier to mess with things.
