I have been using youtube.com for some time now.
I like the diversity of scenes presented.

But tonight my system quit producing sound.

I have _no_ idea whay.

I have _no_ idea how to fix it.

I tried rebooting from power off, which often in the
past has got sound going again.

It did _not_ work :(

Can anyone suggest a way forward.

Have you tried booting the system with Knoppix? You should get the voice saying "Initiating startup sequence" when the GUI starts up. Hopefully that works, otherwise your hardware is suspect or not supported by Knoppix.

What is your system? Can you identify the sound card/chip? The output of lsmod can be helpful.

What distribution are you running?

What desktop are you running? From your ps list it seems to be GNOME.

What sound system are you using (Pulse Audio, ALSA, OSS, maybe something else)? If you don't know, I'll assume it's the default for your distribution.

How have you tested the sound? Do you have a simple command line player for wav files that you can use for testing? I use a program called "play" which is part of the sox package in Fedora. How about for mp3 files? I use a program called mpg123. Others can recommend other simple players.

What program are you using for the mixer/volume control? These might not be the same program, which could be part of the problem.
