If you're blocking scripts (NoScript) then you may have to unblock one
or two scripts from other than the youtube site. I guess not all the
videos originate from youtube itself.

Is this what you are referring to?
Yes and no. I use the NoScript extension to let me select which
Javascript scripts to run (none by default). I have to allow those from
youtube and sometimes from at least one other site to view some videos
or hear their sound.
Meanwhile I am downloading the latest version of
Knoppix and plan to work my way thorugh Gus' list.

I have also found that if I don't keep up on Flash versions, eventually
youtube loses sound. Sometimes it also loses video.
Obviously, you used to get sound, and did nothing obnoxious to kill it.
So it's down to seeing if the system made decisions for you.
o Run system-config-soundcard (or whatever your distro uses) to check
system-wide sound.
o Restart or reconfigure your desktop manager's sound system. Make sure
it's set to the one you want (e.g. Alsa, esound, etc.).
o Run your mixer (in KDE it's Kmix, I don't know what Gnome uses) and
check all possible settings.
o Find some other audio source (website, CD, etc.) to see if you get
sound at all.
