I read the same thing (that it's possibly a font problem). This is what
prompted me to update my system, when I noticed many left over packages
from FC4 and FC6, and resulted in my now hosed laptop.
I installed fontforge as a possible solution (some forums suggested it)
to no avail.

I recently (last night) installed Wine because there is a free app. I
want to run that is Windows only. It runs, but there is no text in the
text windows. I know the text is there, because if I select everything
in the window, and copy it into an editor (Kedit, Gedit, vim, etc.)
the text appears fine in the editor.
I wonder, has anyone tried Project, Outhouse, etc. in Wine? I have
seen that M$ Office (not sure which version(s) run under Wine.
Haven't tried this app, but what you have sounds like a font problem.
I've had similar problems in wine. I don't recall the solution but check
out winehq.org for font problems and solutions.
