You also get mounted file systems.  And the opportunity to run programs.

Right.  But I'm just saying that it doesn't seem so amazing that you
can still boot into single user mode even when half your files are
toast.


Compare to Windows. Remove 65% of the files comprising a Windows system and see if it boots and allows you to do anything in it. I probably got lucky and caught it before it removed any /really/ important stuff.

Trying to install FC8 from a FC8 LiveCD failed with an exception twice. Looks like I'll have to find my spare IDE drive and copy the more important data to it via USB, then do a clean install after I get a DVD.
