I think some people are put off by this.
Okay, since I qualify as a guilty party on this comment I guess I'll answer.
I can think of a few times where I have done that. Usually:
A) I know the original poster, and they aren't living up to what I know
they are capable of.
B) I may have personally helped the original poster on the question or
some form thereunto in the past. This is normally the main trigger for me.
C) The original poster, in my not-so-humble opinion, really didn't do
the bare minimum research on a question that they should have.
Generally this results in a "GIMF"--Google is my Friend(tm).
However, I probably am not being as cognizant of how my comments appear
to newbies as I should be. Mea culpa. I will watch that. I tend to
forget that there are outside observers to a thread which may only be
between 2 or 3 active posters. I'll just ignore something rather than
kick off a comment.
However, I will say this. There is a point in every sysadmins life
where the Old Fart(tm) tells the Young Buck(tm)--"Oy, enough bothering
me with questions. It's time for you to start puzzling out a few of
these answers for yourself."
It's at that moment that you're no longer a newbie.
