I really like the way the MDA part of qmail works (specifically
dot-qmail files). I use it specifically for that, but put a
greylisting proxy in front of it. The sticking spot with qmail for
me is that it accepts all e-mails, processes them, then bounces the
undeliverables. Its default configuration won't block SMTP
connections that misbehave or are obviously abusive in some way.
(There are probably patches that will... never used them, though.)

Switch to postfix and your problems will be resolved. Postfix can be
configured to refuse email based upon only the information in the header,
without ever accepting delivery of the body. All good MTAs should do this.

I did switch to Postfix (I think we sort of talked about it once, but I hadn't completed it yet.). I finished installing and configuring Postfix just as I got the word that GH was cutting my hours. So, Postfix is installed as a relay to the required qmail server. Postfix provides all spam and virus scanning (using a greylisting server, RBL, and AVG, as well as several pre-delivery SMTP checks). It's the first time I've ever used either MTA and I much prefer Postfix.

The problem is GH has not required customers to switch to using it. Currently it is optional as the qmail server is still configured as the main mail server and is still able to receive mail.
