this whole thing probably stems from how the US police have many times
used the cell phone contacts of convicted criminals as a way to get more
of the bad guys/gals. This, in a simple mind would lead you to believe that
they'll find worthy data in anyones phones or laptops so they think they
have the right to collect such data. As you pointed out, stuff taught in
highschool makes it very easy to move data across the border and anyone
with anything incriminating or terrorist related being found in a collected
device at the border is extreme luck and actually unlikely. I can only guess
that they do this not to the average citizen but to those they know have
drug ties, gang ties, or ties to other criminal activities.

It's a fine line and one easily crossed on the way to outright infringement
of legal rights under the constitution. But at the same time, providing proof
for the reason for the search would also expose tactics used to verify a
criminal activity.... It's a tough one especially given how the current Admin
and congress has constantly stomped on our constitutional rights in the
name of the 9/11 event and protecting the US people.

I'm not quite ready to be strapping a memory card to my wang yet.
