(Just a convenient post to set my reply to.)

It's crap like this that deters me from traveling anywhere that I can't use my car or bike (I won't fly), and deters me completely from going to another country by any means.

If I had the need to travel to another country with my laptop, I would encrypt the entire drive and refuse to allow them access. It is personal property, and they have no right to it. Such a trip would only be for business reasons, so if I were denied because I refused to allow them to search my property, then I guess I'd have to sue after the fact (if I really cared that much).

The bottom line is they can keep their fsck'ing hands off of my personal property without a Constitutionally legal reason to put them on it.
