I'm thinking of how to generate revenue from a web business.
I'll just have to take it on faith that ads work and don't turn off people.
Personally I find them distasteful but that may just be me.
Since I can't read every one else's minds, I don't understand why
they aren't turned off by them too.

I think google has actually made wonderful progress here. They have
demonstrated that adds that are a small piece of static text on the edge of
a windows can generate revenue.

Blinking and animated adds is just too "Blade Runner" for me. It's one
thing I'm enjoying about the Kindle. It's a terrible web browser, but it
can't blink. It just can't, it takes too long to change the screen.

I used to run privoxy as an add block. It works quite well, although I've
found it does seem to break some things (like the SDCCU Billpay site).

Webpages that still blink at me just get closed.

I assume you can't stand watching 30 second commercials on TV too.
If so then you are just like me.

I haven't voluntarily watched a TV commercial for probably 20 years now.
All through college, hatred of commercial TV was my primary roommate
selection criteria. Of course, I also find "background" TV to be
detestible.
