While neither of you may like it, nonetheless figuring out what the interviewer is looking for is _always_ a guessing game. Unless you have an inside track (always a good idea;) you need to adapt one of two strategies: 1) Try to figure out waht the interviewer wants and offer it or 2) Ignore the interviewer and simply present yourself and your sklls as best you can. Each strategy has its place.
