If you think of the IP address and subnet mask as dotted-quad representations of binary numbers it might make more sense.

Sometimes the mask is like 255.255.240.0 or 255.255.255.192.  Aagh!
What the heck is going on?  Is there a calculator for this stuff?

ipcalc is a Linux calculator for this stuff.
