put "about:plugins" in the browser URL text field and see that it shows Java as
one of the installed plugins. You can also test a known java applet site too
just
to make sure.

If that is there, I would just go to getfirefox.com and get v2 of Firefox and
use it instead since I too have had problems with v3 beta on both Gutsy and
Hardy.  I would check the ubuntu forums first though since there might be v2
of Firefox in the repository and this way, you keep it managed with your
standard
package manager.

remember, you might have to link to the plugins you have in FF v3 so that FF v2
has all those plugins you need( like Java, flash, acroread, etc ).
