Ok, so I have gotten the desired java applet to work. Here are some
things I learned.
1. Java console can be activated from the java control panel, but no
longer is there an option for it in firefox.
2. Erasing everything having to do with Java and installing a single
version is the best way to go.
3. The plugin for firefox MUST be a symbolic link in the plugins
directory to the java directory as in:
libjavaplugin_oji.so ->
/usr/lib/jre1.6.0_06/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
Copying the plugin to the directory is a sure recipe for disaster.
Thanks to all for their ideas, they pointed me in the right direction to
find the answers. I think the base of the problem was multiple versions
of java installed and not enough housekeeping on my part.
