As a non-Windows expert, let me ask how sensitive a Windows
installation is to its hardware environment. Isn't it likely that
transplanting the disk from one computer to another will upset things?

M$ Windows is likely to barf hard when moved to a new machine as it won't
have the drivers needed to operate the hardware unless the "new" machine is
actually fairly old and likely to have supported hardware. And there doesn't
seem to be an easy way to add drivers beforehand in planning the move.
FYI:
XP:
pre move, kill the plug and prey service and as many services as you can, if you
get the "windows must restart" warning then from a cmd run shutdown -a and keep
going.
then open regedit change
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Environment]
Value Name: DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
Value Data: (1 = show all hidden devices)
close regedit run devmgmt.msc click "view" & "show hidden devices"
being M$ you do have to do BOTH to see all, one shows those that are inactive
but not hidden, the other shows the hidden both shows both GO FIGURE!!!
then go crazy deleting everything, move the drive and turn it on, winhozed will
find all sorts of things most of which were there just on potentially different
settings
VISTA: sacrifice somthing $$$ to the computer gods, and google the differences,
but only IF your license of vista allows you to replace the CPU/MBO
