So you are saying these companies aren't making money?

Indeed. Look at the long list of people and companies who have contributed to the kernel. They all have their reasons for contributing. And it looks to me like the majority of them were paid to do so. Looking through my mailing list archives for various other projects (cfengine, nagios, mysql, etc. etc.) it seems the same for many other projects.
