The only people who think that don't understand either Copyright law or
the GPL (or any other software license for that matter).
The GPL (and BSD, and every other software license I've read) depends
explicitly on copyright for its enforcement ("Obey the terms of this
license or you have no right to a copy of this software"), without which
its terms would be moot.
