Just wondering how many people here use raid on their home desktop machines.

No RAID on the desktop or the small file server (250 GB storage). While we have three desktop boxes, the only data on them is email and FF bookmarks. Copies of all file go to the server.

But the server is backed up every night to a NAS which does use RAID. It's an Infrant (now owned by Netgear) X6 using the default X-RAID setup, which I think is RAID6. It has two 250 GB drives for a total storage capacity of 250 GB (minus 5% for snapshots taken every 4 hours).

Then, for those who do (or know how they would-do), what partitioning do
you use -- a bunch (giving several mds), or one/few (possibly using lvm
on top)?

Or maybe there's some neat stuff by dropping the ext3/lvm blinders?

I'm interested in the answer to those questions also. I expect to replace at least two of the three desktops in the next few months, so maybe I should look into RAID just because.
