I've been pretty good about doing backups but now I'm thinking I need to
do more than copy my files to another hard drive. Specifically, I would
like to store my drives and discs in a media storage safe similar to
this one: <http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/903732/Media-Small-Chest/>
Considering the threat of wildfires as well as the usual kinds I think
it would be a prudent action. Anyone have recommendations for these
things? I need to store two 3.5 inch hard drives and about 20 DVD's plus
a small amount of paper.
No above-ground safe is going to work against a wildfire. The duration
is likely to be too long. You would have to dig a nice deep hole to
stuff things into to avoid wildfire problems.
That having been said, most safes that have a couple of hours rating are
likely to work against a single house fire. The fire department isn't
likely to let your house burn with open flames for 4-6 hours.
In addition, even something as basic as a closed door will protect
against the biggest damage short of completely burning down--smoke and
water--so any safe with a seal will get you that protection. You would
be *amazed* at how well smoke gets into everything and how tenacious it
is once it gets there. House fires are *nothing* like fire you are
normally used to dealing with. The smoke is more like what you get from
burning tires than burning wood.
I still have books that stink of smoke more than 10 years after my
apartment burned. Not fun.
