If the only use of the function is to keep the string from being
optimized away, what keeps the function from also being optimized
away?
If the function actually does something useful, there has to be a way
of calling it from outside the program segment where it resides.
Which means some kind of argument or pointer passing to the outside.
Which means more complications in the outer program.
We are obviously arguing from different premises, no sense in continuing.
