Rephrase: *Everything* about Pascal sucked. *Almost everything* about C sucked.

That makes C the proper choice.

At that point I was amazed that people even bothered with C because
its productivity compared to Turbo Pascal was pretty damn poor. Note
that Turbo had extended capabilities past standard Pascal

Bingo. That was the problem with most Pascal compilers. They didn't have extensions to deal with things like ... oh ... communicating to your hardware or your OS.
