And C++ doesn't do much of the "dynamic" stuff that makes compilers work so hard.

No, the problem is that most people's view of compiler technology for the past 15 years was Visual C++. And Visual C++ sucked rocks for a *looooong* time.

Remember, 99% of all programmers are on Windows.
