I suspect most programming is maintainence. Never much cared for that
myself though. Exploration is much more fun. Maintainence may often
be more important.

And the maintainers are often not the creative explorers.
Lewis and Clark wrote a journal for good reasons. See

Perhaps a Programmers daily Journal, written in as literate
a from as possible, and as Andy might suggest, editied by an
insightful professional, would be a good way to document the
creation of a program for those who follow.
