Just because it is running does not mean Microsoft will not threaten their
patented IP is in it and want you to stop using it, pay them millions, or
just use Windows instead of your favorite other OS. Do you know for a
fact that the mono CLR is completely free of Microsoft patented stuff?
No. Do you know for a fact that Java is? :-) How would you possibly go about proving such a thing?

Ummm, the burden of proof is on the Microsoft apologists, thanks. Microsoft was *convicted* of abusing its power. Sun was not.

However, ho a certain extent, you don't need to prove this anymore with Java/JVM.

Since the code is now released, you can rewrite the Java/JVM code to go *around* any patent. You can't do that with the CLR.

That's actually a better defense that "proving" that you haven't violated any patents.

Mono and all that
Microsoft created stuff is a major threat to developers who care about having a choice in the platforms they develop for.

Pretty much. As long as Java/JVM remains a viable alternative, Microsoft will leave the open source CLR/.Net people alone. The moment CLR/.Net becomes the dominant player, then they'll cut them off.
