My system has two sound cards. Resident on system board an Intel
sound chip, external on USB a Burr-Brown.

Applications -> System Settings -> SoundCard Detection finds both of
them, and plays test sounds through either. There is a pull-down to
select "Primary audio device" but this seems to have no effect.
Changing the setting from Intel to Burr-Brown does not seem to affect
which device is used when I use RealPlayer. The audio signal always
comes out the headphone jack of the Intel device. The "Primary audio
device" seems always to have reverted to Intel when I look again at
the selection panel.

What configuration option have I missed? I have not yet looked for a
way to disable the on-board Intel chip in the BIOS, this seems rather
more violent than necessary. I would like the USB device to take over
the sound output if it is plugged in.
