For complete overkill, amanda works wonders. This does work best if you
are baking up to tape. Rsync, as was mentioned, is another good tool.

The ext2 and ext3 filesystems do not have a reliable working dump
program (so sayeth Linus, so sayeth we all) so do not even look at dump
for ext2/ext3. Xfs has a good dump program, though it tries to be a bit
helpful IMHO. Reiserfs has got nothing as far as dump. I'm not sure
about jfs.
