I thought it was interesting that Linus Torvolds was using a Mac (with Linux). I was just curious how top of the line macs would perform versus a Intel box when running Linux. Do you suspect the Intel box would run faster?
Well, Yellowdog Linux 4.0 on my Mac iBook runs just fine and it is indistinguishable from Fedora Core 3 on x86. The Macintosh Power PC is, in general, a much different processor (RISC) than the standard x86 machine (CISC). This makes speed comparison between them difficult.
It's my belief that the PPC chipset runs better than the x86 but, all in all, I think it's pretty close. The difference is that the overall Macintosh is a much better engineered system than the standard x86 box and the system performs better.
And there's a neat program called 'mol' on the PPC linux which runs the Mac OS systems right from Linux at just about native speed. So, you really can have your cake and eat it too.
