You need /root to be on / for when you login under single-user mode
You just don't want things writing to /root, this typically means don't
run them as root
OK. I'll keep that in mind. The files which were in /root were related to
installing MySQL and
PHP and also the data imports (.tar.gz) from the other server. These added up
to about 700M which
is a significant percentage of 3G. The installation didn't have much of a
margin and we crossed
it.
/var/tmp is the best place to DL things to, even if you are root
