Looking for help on monitor resolution in Linux.
I tried setting resolution of 1280 x 1024 for a Viewsonic flat screen monitor in Fedora 3. It said to log out and it would take effect next time x windows starts. However, the next time it started, the monitor said resolution not supported. I had to connect to a crt monitor to be able to see what I was doing and change the resolution back to a lower setting. The error message was wrong about the capability of the monitor. Its documentation said it would support a max resolution of 1280 x 1024. I tried the same monitor in Windows and was able to run at 1280 x 1024. I then tried the same thing on another flat screen monitor with same results - it would work in Linux at a lower resolution but not 1280 x 1024 yet would work in Windows at 1280 x 1024.
Any ideas on why I can run the monitor at 1280 x 1024 in Windows but not Linux?
