I think the magic incantation can be found buried in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and is:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

but I haven't tried doing that on my Ubuntu system.  In any case,
"monitor type" is essentially shorthand for "Min/Max Horizontal Rate =
...., Min/Max Vertical Rate = ....."
