The usual problem with movie file formats is that each of these .mov, .mpg,
.avi, and .wmv are
each containers which can hold a wide variety of content. Hence, it is not
just a matter of the
file type but the content. In the case of the movies, they can be encoded with
a variety of
codecs (coder-decoder algorithm). For example, there are some codecs which are
simply not
available for MacOS X so they are unplayable by any software even though other
.wmv or .avi files
can be played. A similar situation might exist for Linux.

All that said, the two open-source programs which work the best for playing odd
video formats on
the Mac are mplayer and vlc. I know these exist for Linux and suggest you give
them a try for
your files. It may also be a matter of finding the right codecs for the files
you want.

Since this is obviously an important issue, I have long wondered why there
isn't an easy utility
to analyze a video file and determine its codec. I'd like to see such a
program for MacOS X but a
Linux version would also be welcome.
