Hi all,

It's time for me to do my pc upgrade that I do once or twice a decade. I
primarily use my pc for video editing (along with basic uses (browsing, word
processing, etc. but no gaming)). I want to use either Fedora 8 or Ubuntu
as my main OS. My concern is that some linux distributions do not like some
motherboards or hardware configurations. I do not want to purchase
something and find out that Fedora 8 or Ubuntu doesn't like my motherboard,
etc.. Anyway, I'm thinking of getting a very decent motherboard. I'm
looking at Fry's online, tiger direct, new egg and I see many types.
I'm leaning towards a two- duo-core server motherboard. That is, two CPU
sockets supporting duo core CPUs. My budget is about $1000 for the
motherboard and CPUs, but I'm willing to stretch that if the performance
difference is big. My questions are:

1. Are there some manufacturers of motherboards and CPUs I should avoid, or
some that seem to work well with Fedora 8 or Ubuntu that I should look
into?
2. Is a system with one quad core have better throughput than a system with
two duo-cores?

Thanks,
Will
