Knoppix has a great list of what they call cheat codes, some of which
help get around problems like this. For instance:

knoppix no{apic,agp,apm,audio,ddc} Skip parts of HW-detection (1)
knoppix no{dhcp,fstab,firewire} Skip parts of HW-detection (2)
knoppix no{pcmcia,scsi,swap,udev} Skip parts of HW-detection (3)
knoppix nousb Skip parts of HW-detection (4)

If I am having a problem I add them all and then eliminate 1/2 of them till the
problem reappears. Then I keep eliminating till I find it.

A full list can be found at:

No matter what distro I install I always have to add noapic. With knoppix I
have to also put in vga=normal.

One of my favorites on the list is: toram This loads the whole live cd to ram,
making the computer much faster.
