Are you able to play the mp3 files with any other player? A quick test is to use the command line app 'mpg123'. That should tell you if the mp3 files are valid or not. If you're not set on Rhythmbox, I've found Exaile (GUI) to be a great music player. It handles almost all the file formats and allows editing of track metadata.
