Well, Knoppix managed to hide the pertinent control program pretty well. It took me several minutes to find it, and I knew what I was looking for. Frequently the automated display setup chooses something weird that does not fit your monitor. Circle K -> Control Center -> Peripherals -> Display -> Size & Orientation will tell you what it thinks you have and should let you make changes. Probably you can change Screen Size and Refresh rate to suit your monitor better. Try 1280x1024 and 60 Hz for starters.
