ubuntu version numbers/benefits

I understand the numbering scheme for Ubuntu,where the first number is 
the year, and after the dot, the month released.

But I don't understand what benefit v8.10 is over 8.04 if you've updated 
everything on each.

Can anyone enlighten me?
