I understand the numbering scheme for Ubuntu, where the first number is the

But I don't understand what benefit v8.10 is over 8.04 if you've updated
everything on each.
Can anyone enlighten me?

8.10 release notes:

There are a number of OS changes, including the new Encrypted Private
Directories support (seems a bit like TrueCrypt, but I haven't really
looked into it as I'm still running 8.04.1). In addition, the
repositories for 8.10 tend to have newer versions of apps than 8.04.
Rich,
If you're thinking of upgrading the distribution, be aware that it's not
always without issues. I've watched a guy at work do this to several
machines and it always took an hour or two of googling and fixing to get
things back where they were.
