Toward the close, John Alvarado shared his vision for SDCS. It was the
old one about salaried employees, except this time, there was a
store-front office as well -- kinda like King Bail Bonds. I didn't see
anyone smiling or shaking his head, except Gus, who was shaking his
head
all night and doesn't count.
If he really wants to do this, he probably ought to go join SDMUG
instead. I'm betting that they will be more receptive to this idea.
Personally, I think that this is probably the real issue behind the
secession.
What else? It was pretty cordial (except for Gus shaking his head).
There was the usual sidewalk meeting of Kplug afterward ("Office space
and salaries, for chrissake!? Who was that guy!?") I think that was
from
Andrew. Gus reassured him that (1) it would never happen, and (2) he'd
hear it again every meeting that John A. attended.
I think someone else made that actual statement, but it fairly
accurately represents my view of his scheme.
Personally, I'm *not* a priori against paying out some money.
However, it better damn well have a goal (a la software bounties)
rather than some vague "handling paperwork".
BTW, there was pretty good Sig representation. OS/2, PC, South Bay.
Yeah, I'm of two minds about this. I'd like to see more engagement
by SIG's, but I'd also like to see the SDCS meetings be almost
inconsequential. An official SDCS meeting should be about 15 minutes
*total*; everything else should be unofficial/informal discussion
afterward. This is part of the reason why I don't understand what
the big issue was with heading up SDMUG and SDCS. If the SDCS
meetings are long and annoying, it's because they allow them to be.
Personally, I think that having an sdcs-steer mailing list (which
should be public) would go a long way to wiping out any length of
that meeting. That way, topics can be discussed at length and at
leisure rather than at the meeting. At that point, the sole purpose
of the meeting effectively becomes a vote on the actions of the
mailing list discussion.
It would also help out with communication coordination. I have been
somewhat surprised at how disconnected the SDMUG folks sometimes seem
to be even with respect to each other.
