After finally getting a chance to get really suspicious about what was going on, I logged into sparky and discovered /tmp was full because of /tmp/rewrite.log.

For whatever reason, apache was configured to use that path for the rewrite engine for zope on www.kernel-panic.org. I've moved the file from /tmp to /var/log/apache2 (in line with all the other apache log files.)

The old file is (currently) /var/log/apache2/rewrite.log.1.gz (or will be once it's compressed.)

I've restarted apache and told postfix to flush itself to take care of any backlogged email.
