This would be my fault. There's no reason to keep a rewrite log for our site. I had turned the rewrite logging on temporarily when I was troubleshooting the mod_proxy issues with Zope, and completely neglected to turn it off.
The old file is (currently) /var/log/apache2/rewrite.log.1.gz (or will be once it's compressed.)
I turned the rewrite logging off entirely in Apache and killed this file. Sorry for the trouble.
