(Apologies in advance for the top-post, blackberry doesn't give me much an option)
It's much better than the machine we currently have, and you decidedly can't beat the price. I've called a few vendors for some quotes on mid-grade servers like an hp dl145, and the prices come out to around $2800 -- this is for a dual-core 2.6GHz opteron 2218, 4GB RAM, and a mirrored 80GB SATA array. It has a 3 year warranty and basic out-of-band management. In my experience, it's really not worth it at all to piece a server together out of comodity parts. I'd much rather pay the extra money for a complete, business-class server. As they say, you get what you pay for ... The specs and the price on that supermicro box though sound good. Supermicro makes decent entry-level stuff, and it's rock solid stable. We could spend a couple hundred and upgrade the RAM as necessary as well.
