I think you're referring to the cutout in the tank for the radio and transponder. The rest of the tank comes within about six inches of the back of the panel, which isn't enough room for radio gear. That cutout leaves about 13", which is enough for the usual 11" or 12" length of that kind of equipment plus their connectors.
