According to the FAA 43.13 you should not sand wood before bonding. I know that a lot of us do sand to get a good flat surface, but particularly on end grain it is not a good idea because the sawdust gets into the pores and keeps the glue from penetrating. Cut and paste of chapter 1-6 missed some words, but you get the idea below. I highly advise reading at least chapter 1 on wood here: http://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/Chapter_01.pdf. Link for the whole AC is here: http://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/advisory_circulars/index.cfm/go/document.information/documentid/99861. I recommend that everyone building an experimental get the whole book and on tech counseler inspections I always tell people to have a copy sitting on the bench for the examiner to see that you have it when they come and do your final inspection.
1-6 sandpaper must never be used to smooth softwood surfaces that are to be bonded. Sawn surfaces must approach well-planed surfaces in uniformity, smooth- ness, and freedom from crushed fibers. It is advisable to clean both joint surfaces with a vacuum cleaner just prior to adhesive applica- tion. Wood surfaces ready for bonding must be free from oil, wax, varnish, shellac, lacquer, -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: KR> Fwd: Grain direction From: PPaulVsk at aol.com List-Post: [email protected] Date: Sun, January 19, 2014 5:41 pm To: krnet at list.krnet.org Larry, the mark that you see is a burn mark from my sander. I did remove the mark but that brings up a question. Would sanding burn marks affect the bond with T88 epoxy. I think I've been wearing out my sandpaper a little far to save $ and get to a point to were I burn a lot wood.
