> Are com radios required to have a 8130 for experimental aircraft ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Any radio that meets the frequency separation requirements can be used. Some spend $800 to $1000 for a panel mount. I've been using a JHP-520 nav/com handheld for years now and it works great. Any hand held you use will need a good external antenna and preferably aircraft power. I can easily communicate 100 miles at altitude with mine. It is a full 5 watt output. I paid $275 for mine but I see the price is now in the $350 range and they are a bit hard to find. I only found one site that sold them but I'm sure there are others. http://www.acespilotshop.com/pilot-supplies/handheld/jhp-520.htmAircraft Aircraft Spruce used to carry them but no more it seems. Mine is located on a swing down bracket between my knees and I work the buttons with my left thumb. Great little radio. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/32133949/IMG_8619.JPG Larry Flesner
