I am talking about the drive Steve had many years ago. I was a cast "bullet"
extension housing with a prop extension shaft, anti-vibration link, and thrust
bearing. It was not a PSRU.

That sounds simular to what I saw on the Wittman V-Witt at the auction this
weekend. I should have taken a photo. It was a casting that bolted to the VW
case in the same location where the transmission was originally. There was a
steel shaft that bolted to the end of the crankshaft and went forward passing
through this casting about a foot forward where there was a large bearing then
the end of this shaft was tapered and looked like it would hold a Continental
prop hub. Neat setup that was direct drive though I would guess the front
bearing would need changed out every couple hundred hours. This casting made
for a very long tapered/streamlined nose on the airplane. There was no
provision for electric start. Also the magneto was driven from the pulley end
of the crankshaft. The engine overall length was long for a VW install and the
magneto did pass through the firewall.
