To All: Want to make your veedub air-startable? Install a compression release.
Fuel on, ignition on, pull the big red knob, put the nose down, wait for the prop to spin-up then release the red knob. This ultra high tech option consists of a set of fingers that are cammed down against the retainers of the exhaust valves. The fingers are fitted to a shaft installed in the valve gallery of the cylinder heads, the shaft is connected to a lever, the levers are actuated by a pull-cable. SOP for motorgliders. This isn't anything new. I developed such a modification some years ago for the long-wing KR but Ken Rand and Mira Slovak were the only people who showed any interest. Previously discussed (with more detail) on the AirVW Group. -R.S.Hoover
