Duncan, The original KR retracts are very low. Later builders installed longer, fixed-gear and some used larger wheels, setting the plane (and prop) further from the earth, making it look bigger and much easier to see around the airplane patch. In fact, come to think of it, most questions about the KR can be answered by reading through Mark Langford's site.
