I'm not familiar with the "Maxi-1" pump, but most VW pumps require attention to the details of the gasket thickness between the cover and the body. There are different thickness gaskets available, which are used to set up the proper amount of clearance between gears and cover. It sounds like yours didn't have enough clearance, and might need a new cover if it's "quite scored".
