  You are correct, they had the O300 Continental 145 hp engines. My first 
airplane was a 1958 C 172, about 118 mph was about it in cruise, that was 1977 
I think. I ended up with a C 210 there for a few years and bought a second 172 
of same vintage and the mph was the same. Great airplanes for taking a couple 
people with you, but a kicker on cross country trips, especially if you had a 
headwind. I also owned a C 120 that had a C85 and it would out run the 172.
  I still like the 172s but I am one of those people that likes almost any 
airplane. 

  KR2s are quick in comparison, even a slow KR !!!
