I don't know about VW's (although I've seen several with the cooler located
back there), but on a Corvair, the rear cylinders get more cooling air than
the middle cylinders. I presume this is because the air "piles up" back
there and now it's got to go somewhere, so it's through those fins. This is
exactly where Bill Clapp has his oil cooler, and I guess it works. It's
awfully convenient on a Corvair, since that's almost the stock cooler
location! See http://www.krnet.org/mvn2005/050909089.jpg for a photo. The
cooler is the black thing in the middle.

The middle cylinders have always run hotter on mine, and need a little
baffling in there to scoop some air through those fins. Joe Horton has done
this on his and his are closer together now. I'll do that next time I have
the plenums off. I should have done it last week, but I was in too much of
a hurry to get it flying. I did 1.8 hours yesterday, and will get another
hour or two in today...
